Totally Transformed Tuesday #3 & Features!

Old World Blanket Chest

I had so much fun working on this piece even though it was over 100 degrees in the shade!  I can't wait to share it with you, but before I do I'd like to remind you of the Totally Transformed Tuesday linky party! Now here is the finished blanket chest!


I have been wanting to do something in the Old World style for some time now and when I saw this chest in Canton, Texas at First Monday Trade Days, I knew it was just the piece for the design I had running through my head.

Here is what she looked like when I bought her.


She did not have much going for her except that she was solid wood, fairly large, and had pretty little legs.

Here are the details of how I achieved that gorgeous finish.

First, I picked out three images that I thought would work together. In the beginning I thought I wanted a large old world  scene that I could split into three parts, but after a lot of thought I decided on two pictures of 18th century women (one I know is Marie Antoinette) and one with a mother and her children.  

The portraits of the two women came from the Graphics Fairy and the center image with the children is from my free graphics archive. I took the images and had them enlarged to fit the three panels in front.  


To start I painted different areas of the chest with layers of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Greek Blue, Louis Blue, and Paris Gray focusing on sections I knew later would be distressed. By doing so I created the illusion that it had been painted many times over the years, and in painting only certain areas I saved a lot of time and paint.  I then covered the back and all edges, center strips, and legs with Old White.  On the side panels I used Louis Blue. 


Now it looks like this:


Once that was dry I took a brush loaded with Greek Blue and painted around the outside edges of the side panel over the Louis Blue. I then added more Louis Blue, wet on wet, and using a damp rag blended and soften the colors into each other.


Once that was dry I chose one of my larger stencils that fit almost perfectly into the panel and painted it with a silver metallic acrylic.


While that was drying I very carefully decoupaged my images to the front of the chest.  I sealed them with two coats of Mod Podge.

I then applied a thin coat of clear wax to the entire piece and distressed. Once the was was dry I mixed my favorite Expresso glaze and applied it to the chest in large areas wiping it off with a dry cloth. I also waxed and glazed the images to help age them.  

The back of the chest was painted, glazed, and distressed also in case one wanted to place it in an open area. Next, I applied dark wax, very lightly, to the feet and any other area I wanted to have a more antiqued look.

The top was stripped and stained with dark walnut and sealed with three coats of matte polyurethane.


And there you have it! I hope you like it as much as I do. I'm having a hard time thinking about carrying it to the shop. :-)

Hello friends out in blogland! I hope this past week has been a good one.  It really seemed to fly by for me I've been so busy knitting for the new grandchild on the way, painting furniture, cleaning my craft room (which was a NIGHTMARE), and I had two of my grandchildren off and on this week.

Totally Transformed Tuesday Linky Party #1

Hello my fellow bloggerettes! I hope your week has started out well. 

I'm starting a new venture on my blog today. I will be hosting a linky party every Tuesday called Totally Transformed Tuesday.

Thanks Kathleen and A Reminder

I'm so honored that Kathleen @ "Melange" blog has given me the Versatile Blogger Award!



I guess I am pretty versatile as I love to do so many things besides furniture; including, scrapbooking, crafts, sewing, counted cross stitch, crochet, and knitting. By the way my daughter is expecting her third, which will be a boy, and I am busy knitting.  I will share a few of my projects with you if I can ever finish one. lol

I am so honored that Kathleen thought of me and now I have to spread the love to fifteen more bloggers. It will be hard to choose there are so many wonderful ladies out there but I will do my best.

  4. One of things on my bucket list is to travel to Wales and view all their castles.

  7. And, this is most embarrassing one, I have a door knob fetish. I can't pass up a pretty antique door knob which believe it or not are hard to find around here especially the glass ones that I like the most. :-)

Bed to Bench And A Giveaway

I’m so excited to be celebrating one year of blogging! I never thought I would have enough to share for a whole year so I have surprised myself and hope I have inspired you.

Now I want to share how I transformed an old bed head and foot board into a garden/porch bench. 

Here is the after:



First, I told my helper what I wanted to do and how to go about getting started. (By the way my helper on this project was my son-in-law, Jeremy, who also did all the carpentry work in my kitchen renovation.)

We took the footboard and measured in 14” on each side and cut the ends off. We then attached the end pieces at a 90 degree angle on the front of the head board. This was a full size bed so the foot board had to be cut. A smaller bed may not need to be cut down.


I chose fourteen inches because this is the usual depth of a chair.Once the foot board ends were screwed into each side we added 2 x 4’s across the width for the seat.


As you can see here we cut two pieces of 2 x 4 and screwed them into the inside of each end two inches lower than the top so the seat would be flush with the ends of the bench. Did that make sense? The picture should help you understand.

I then filled in all the screw holes and rough spots with wood filler. Once that was good and dry I sanded the whole piece down and cleaned it. After that I painted it top and bottom with primer and then two coats of an outdoor, semi-gloss, white paint.


I painted the whole bench so that it would be suitable to use outside.

After it was dry (a couple of days later) I stenciled the floral vine design on the center panels and painted the tops of the post a pretty green. I just loved how it turned out and if I had a porch I would probably have kept it. lol


I’m looking for a pretty bed to make another one, but not having much luck. Not all head and foot boards will look as good as this one does and I’m kind of picky. 



I hope you have enjoyed this makeover and are all fired up to make your own porch bench. I have to get back to preparing for my 4th of July party. I’ll share pictures and a couple of projects I did for my party later in the week.
